RIGHTS

Government, Rights, & You

Below, you’ll find our three episode script for a planned after-school-energy in-school production.  It is NOT designed as a ‘Know Your Rights’ training, though there are many calls to action for the audience to seek those activities out.  Instead, each episode is designed to reduce conflict and misunderstandings that lead to escalating tensions during the public’s interactions law enforcement.

Many of the questions posed by students and the scenarios used to address them in these scripts were originally conceived by 17-22 year old young Nevadans who were serving with Project REAL as interns between January 2017 through June 2019.  When the material was finalized in August 2019, it had been reviewed and revised by Nevadan members of law enforcement (active and retired), various defense attorneys that practice in Nevada, and staff from Nevada’s ACLU branch.

Ultimately, if you find the material is 80% helpful, and 20% not exactly your cup of tea…well, we did our job perfectly then.  We all want safe communities.  Unfortunately it seems that as each year goes by it not only becomes harder to reach consensus on what the path to safe communities should look like, but the conversation around that grows more and more contentious.

This will not solve that ongoing debate, and it was never designed to do that. The purpose it does serve – one which we believe is succeeds in – is contributing to safer interactions between law enforcement officers and the community members they serve.

With that being said, we proudly present Government, Rights, & You.

My favorite part of the fieldtrip to the courthouse is when I got to play the part of Ron. I got to go on the witness chair and speaking. I helped Potter to be not guilty. Thank you for the great opportunity.

Thank you for letting us watch the civil case!  It was cool because it was a real case and not one played out. I had a lot of fun watching the other kids act out a session.  Thank you for your time.
